AltaSea Project
Sharkbait Dive Club is proud to Host Pat Means-Manager, Outreach and Strategic Partnerships for the AltaSea Project on Tuesday June the 9th at 6:30pm at Graziano’s Ititalian Restaurant in Yorba Linda. Pat will be speaking to us about The AltaSea Poject.
Alta Sea brings together science, business and education to generate innovative solutions to the global challenges of sustainability. Located on an iconic 35-acre campus in the Port of Los Angeles, AltaSea works to demonstrate how the oceans directly contribute to the well-being of humankind and the health of the earth.
To do so, AltaSea will:
Expand science-based understanding of the oceans. AltaSea will convene and support the world’s best marine scientists in an urban ocean-based research facility that develops creative and cross-disciplinary solutions.
Catalyze the creation of relevant new industries. AltaSea will support new and existing businesses that commercialize scientific breakthroughs and emerging technologies to create ocean-related products and services.
Pioneer cutting-edge education and communications programs. AltaSea will ignite knowledge and excitement in audiences of all ages and backgrounds with programs that communicate about the oceans and their importance in achieving global sustainability.
Their Mission:
The ocean is one of the greatest treasures of the world, fundamental to our very existence. It is not only beautiful and mysterious, but it also nourishes and inspires billions of human beings around the globe. The ocean strongly influences weather patterns and the climate, and absorbs carbon dioxide. It is a critical source of food, energy and mineral wealth; and supports recreation, tourism and the transport of people, goods and food.
Humankind has long viewed the bounty of the ocean as inexhaustible and thus has neglected to adequately protect and manage it. In addition, the ocean is still an unexplored frontier, and the full measure of its vast resources is yet unknown. Only now are we beginning to understand its importance, search its depths, and appreciate its significance.
AltaSea knows that a world that values both the beauty and unexplored potential of our ocean is better placed to reverse the long-term trends of depletion and invest in its future. Through a unique collaboration of science, business, and education, AltaSea seeks revolutionary approaches to ocean-related sustainability issues. While the challenges are great, AltaSea believes that together we can create the future to which we all aspire.
